Resource Corner!



Hello grade 5 students, 
This post outlines some resources that you may need when completing your homework or assignments. The following resources can also be found in the resource section of our cyber classroom. The dictionary will help you with your spelling and vocabulary. You may use the curriculum documents to learn more about the grade 5 course content and materials. Finally, you may use links to learning to assist you with your science homework.  If you would need  other resources please let me know.

Measurement

Good morning boys and girls! 
I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather. This week in class we will be continuing our unit on measurement and  will be learning about conversations and converting meters to centimeter, decimeter, and kilometer to metres. Energy!!



Hello boy and girls,
    In science class we have been discussing the consumption of renewable and non-renewable resources and conserving energy. We use a lot of energy every day for transportation, cooking, heating rooms, lighting and entertainment. There are many ways society can conserve energy.  Over the next week we will be examining various ways to reduce energy consumption in our homes and schools. Over the weekend I would like you to come up with 5 ways to reduce energy in your home and be prepared to share your ideas with the rest of the class. I have also found an excellent website energy kids for you check out, it has some useful information to help get you started towards reducing your energy. Earth Day!!

Hello boys and girls,
I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. A reminder that Earth Day is on April 22nd and is celebrated all around the world. Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. More than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues.  
On Thursday April 15, 2010 we will be making paper-mache globe to celebrate Earth day so please come to class prepared to get dirty. For more information on Earth Day, please visit Earth Day Canada.

Angles!

Hello Everyone!!
We are continuing our unit on geometry and spatial sense and this week we will be identifying and classifying acute, right obtuse, and straight angles. In geometry, an angle is the figure formed by two rays sharing a common endpoint, called the vertex of the angle. I have found two great website math is fun where you to explore acute, right obtuse, and straight angles and ambleside where you can participate twenty interactive  angle activities.





Type of Angle
Description
Acute Angle
An angle that is less than 90°
Right Angle
An angle that is 90° exactly
Obtuse Angle
An angle that is greater than 90° but less than 180°
Straight Angle
An angle that is 180° exactly
 

Parts of an Angle




The corner point of an angle is called the vertex
And the two straight sides are called arms
The angle is the amount of turn between each arm.

The Human Body!!

Good morning!
I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter and Passover holiday. We will begin our unit on the human body on Tuesday. Over the next three weeks we look at the different organ systems found in our bodies. The human body is made up of a head, neck, torso, and the organ systems.  I have found four excellent websites for you to explore: kids health, kids biology, organ system game and kids connect where you can watch videos, read fun facts and complete fun activities and learn more about the human body. As explore these sites I would like you record five organ systems that you discovered and be prepared to share them with the rest of the class.



















Here is an excellent book to read: The Human Body, by Pascale Hedelin and illustrated by Robert Barborini.

Reminder about Earth Hour

Hello students and parents,
On March 27 at 8:30 pm, millions of people around the world will come together and turn off their lights for an hour to make a statement about their concern for climate change. It’s our responsibility to lessen the amount of energy we consume on a daily basis to protect our future and future generations. To learn more about how Earth Hour click here.
Let's work together and turn off our lights, televisions, computers and radios for one hour on March 27th.

Dear students and parents,

Welcome students and parents to our grade 5 cyber classroom! I would like to thank you all for visiting. Our cyber classroom  has been set up to inform students and parents about current events, activities, announcements, and course material related to the grade 5 classroom.
